En el hemisferio norte, en la primavera (mediados de marzo, mes de abril)Al aumentar la temperatura del suelo, unas hormonas contenidas en las raíces empiezan activar el metabolismo de la planta. Se inicia el flujo de savia desde las raíces hasta las artes aéreas y empieza el crecimiento de las yemas que dará lugar a hojas y frutos.
La planta empezará a crecer gracias a las reservas acumuladas en las raíces y en el tronco, dado que al no haber todavía hojas, no puede realizar la fotosíntesis.
